Tappahannock, VA (July 27, 2011) – RivahFest Steering Committee is pleased to announce the third 2011 grant in a continuing series to support local community organizations. Since 2003 RivahFest festival surpluses have been set aside to build a fund to reinvest in our community. This year, the RivahFest Grant Committee identified six worthy areas and plans to award a series of grant gifts throughout 2011. The third organization selected in 2011 as recipient of a $500 grant is the Tappahannock SDA Community Service better known as the Community Food Bank. The first grant of 2011 was awarded to Operation Inasmuch, and the second grand was in support of Tappahannock Main Street Program street signage project. For more details of other RivahFest Grants recipients, visit www.rivahfest.com and check under Festival Organization and Giving Back.

Tappahannock SDA Community Service provides vital food bank service to over 300 qualified families representing over 1,000 individuals in need throughout Essex county. Among the organizations that donate to the Food Bank are over 20 local churches, over a dozen civic groups, schools, local businesses and groups set up specifically to acquire food supplies. Recently SDA has added WalMart and KFC food sources who contribute approximately one quarter of the Food Bank’s supplies, added to the USDA Central Virginia source representing the balance of the supplies. Tappahannock SDA Community Service is supported by two dozen volunteer members, handling pick up of supplies from Central Virginia Food Bank and local food collection groups, repackaging bulk food, and distributing food at their Essex Square location or delivering to the home bound. Every single gift and monetary donation is distributed to those in need in our communities.

"Our original RivahFest financial goal was to provide an exciting and affordable event for our community while building financial reserves for contingencies such as inclement weather. We achieved that goal two years ago and now have surplus funds,” Katherine Newman, RivahFest 2011 Co-Chair and EVB Assistant Vice-President for Small Business Banking commented “I'm excited that we are using our surplus to provide grants for the support of community programs and projects. Everyone involved has worked hard each year to make RivahFest a success. Giving back to our community has been the purpose of this event from the beginning. It’s an honor to be a part of RivahFest and what it means to our community." Elizabeth Franklin, RivahFest 2011 Co-Chair, added “I feel very fortunate that we can make RivahFest just not a one day event - through our grant program we are able to give back to our community on an on going basis. It is such a rewarding feeling for Downtown Tappahannock to come alive the third Saturday of June in additional that RivahFest is able to fund these grants and help various programs within our community”.

The next RivahFest is scheduled for Saturday, June 18, 2016. The RivahFest steering committee for 2015 draws over 500 volunteers from the community. The steering committee is continuously working throughout the year on new projects and improvements to the event and brings together a wide skill set including Thomas Bradshaw (Entertainment), David Broad (Promotion & Website), Terry Brooks (Arts & Crafts), John Clickener (Treasurer), Elizabeth Franklin (Co-Chair 2009-11), Rebecca Hubert (Sponsorship), Jeff James (Planning & Liaison), Sharon James (Past Chair), Kristen Morris (Tastes of Tappahannock), Katherine Newman (Co-Chair 2009-11) and Joey Reinhardt (Publications).
